Google Analytics is a great way to track performance and see trends that exist in terms of the data collected about your website visitors. A cool trend to look at and keep track of is how many visitors your website gets and whether you are gaining or losing visitors as time goes on.
Why are trends important?Trends are important when it comes your website because it can tell you how people are engaging with your website and if your website is attracting new visitors. When it comes to businesses, they often will create goals they want to achieve with their website like increasing the time someone spends on their website or increasing the overall number of visitors their site has every month. Another good goal mentioned in the book, Introduction to Google Analytics, is looking at the site or blog and seeing if you can add more compelling content , so that over time, the average duration of a session increases"(Kelsey 40) . This is an important goal because you want to have an engaging website that will encourage people to buy your product or support your service. Google Analytics comes in handy by allowing you to compare the number of people who visit your site in one week to another week to see how your website is performing currently compared to the past.
How to track trends:
With Google Analytics you can easily compare data ranges to see if your website is doing good and is attracting new users over time. You do this by first going to Google Analytics and clicking on audience overview and than selecting the two date ranges you want to compare. Below is an example of an overview of the number of visitors to the Google Merchandise store website from this week compared to last week. You can see from the graph below that more people visited the site this week, showing that the website is doing good and attracting more people as time goes on. You can also see important metrics regarding sessions and users, making it an easy way to keep track of your websites performance.
